A community of above and below the line crews and creatives working in Vancouver’s screen-based industries who identify as Indigenous, Black, People of Color and 2SLGBTQIA+.
Founded by Jason Mackay, The Collective Bunch Society is a non-profit that works with all the major production companies and agencies in Vancouver to expand their list of BIPOC creatives and thus scale their services and offer a wider variety of storytelling content for all of their clients. Collective Bunch creates greater access to employment opportunities and job skills for Vancouver's BIPOC communities.
“I want it to be as easy as possible for people to get hired, build relationships, share knowledge, and change perceptions.
In 2020 I made the decision to leave a successful film production company after 15 years as a partner to open space and create a change in my life.
Almost immediately, that led me to this – the creation of a collective of talent within the film and creative industry that better reflects our city’s culturally diverse demographic. The film business is a global business. These productions can choose to set themselves up anywhere in the world. So we should not only promote the city but the diverse talent as well.
Growing up mixed race (half black, half white) in Vancouver, I’ve always been acutely aware of how advertising and movies can be very stereotypical in the roles they cast and when I eventually became involved in the industry, I noticed how the film crews were not diverse at all. It’s finally time to change that narrative.
Creating opportunities will lead to communication between BIPOC creators and others in the film industry (especially those who are responsible for hiring). We know that there are many opportunities for BIPOC creatives to join the film and creative industry but that some may need encouragement and proof that it’s a viable career option. For example, in BC there are excellent opportunities for working in VFX but some individuals may have been told that a more practical career route should be followed. Seeing BIPOC professionals who are part of the industry can inspire others to take the leap!”
