Celebrating our west coast creative community. Meet Carson Ting of Chairman Ting Art + Design.
What is Chairman Ting Art + Design and how was it born?
Chairman Ting Art + Design is, as the name suggests, an art and design studio. It started as an experimental side hustle while I was an advertising art director. I was looking for a break from advertising and a way to make art projects purely for fun. Even the name was a joke in the beginning, and somehow it stuck. Now every day is full-time fun, for the most part!
How does Chairman Ting want to be known in this city?
We’d like to be known as a fun and playful art studio that contributes to the community in the most positive way possible.
What makes a piece of art and design great for you?
Something that is thought provoking, visually impactful and makes you feel something inside.
Can you share some insight into your own process that you feel is key to great creative?
There’s a lot that goes into making great work. Some things that I think help create great work are being open minded, listening to clients and working collaboratively. Also, being open to trying new approaches to solving creative problems is always a great way to unlock new worlds of creativity.
Whose work here on the west coast are you finding exciting right now?
I’m constantly inspired by so many different people but the first to come to mind are Geoff McFetridge, James Jean and Tristan Eaton. What I love about their work and their creative practices is their incredible level of craft and how they are all able to be so unique and distinct in such a saturated market. They have also all found a way to balance work between the fine art world and commercial art world which is something I really admire about them.
